Miami is the No. 1 city for job seekers, study says

by Joe Ward

Despite being unaffordable for many working-class individuals and families, Miami is considered to be the best city for job seekers in 2017, according to a new report by the website Indeed.com.

The job posting site crunched the numbers for the 50 metros with the most postings on Indeed, seeking to find out which cities: have the most favorable labor market, have the highest average salary, have a good work-life balance and have good job security.

Miami came in first overall and had the highest ranking for work-life balance and job security and advancement, according to Indeed. The work-life balance score is not surprising, as Miami has one of the most sought-after nightlife scenes in the country.

The city’s job market favorability – Indeed’s ranking of competition for open positions based on job postings versus the number of clicks they get – is also one of the best in the country, according to the report.

Miami ranks third-worst for workers’ salaries, which should come as no surprise to many working people in the city. Since the Great Recession, incomes in the city have only grown by 2 percent.

The slow income growth is especially worrisome because housing costs keep rising. But there are well-paying jobs available in the market, according to Indeed.

“There is a downside, however – a dollar doesn’t stretch as far as in most of the other cities we looked at,” reads Indeed’s report.

Most of the top cities for job seekers are in the South, and Florida has three cities in the top 10: Miami, Orlando (2), and Jacksonville (7). It’s not just retirees who prefer moving to warmer climates: workers and corporations are joining in too.

“The Sun Belt continues to be a region of high-growth and opportunity as companies and workers alike have moved toward strong job markets,” the report reads.
