New high-speed train could transform Florida cities

by Kelly McCabe

The U.S. is getting its first high-speed train that ultimately will stretch 235 miles from Orlando east to the coast and down to Miami — for a total travel time of three hours, NPR reported. Phase one of the $3 billion project, funded by All Aboard Florida, will open this week and run from West Palm Beach to Fort Lauderdale, then stretching into Miami in early 2018.

The train, Brightline, is expected to take 3 million cars off roads in the state’s most populated areas, NPR reported. The train’s stations are located in city centers, with further public transportation nearby, as well as retail, restaurants and condominiums, which could transform the cityscapes. For instance, the Fort Lauderdale station is located adjacent to Las Olas Boulevard, which is known for its shopping and dining, as well as beaches, museums and an arts district.
