South Miami to require solar panels on all new homes

by Claire Fountas

South Miami passed a law Tuesday in which all new homes — including some renovation projects — must have solar panels installed, according to a recent Miami Herald report. The new measure will take effect Sept. 18 and is the first of its kind in Florida.

The city will require the installation of 175 square feet of solar panels per every 1,000 square feet of available roof space. Home renovations that will replace or extend the structure by more than 75 percent must follow the rule as well. The new ordinance passed 4-1 with South Miami commissioner Josh Liebman dissenting.

High schooler Delaney Reynolds from Miami-Dade County jumpstarted the proposal more than a year ago when she wrote to multiple mayors in her area, according to a report by Inside Climate News. Philip Stoddard, South Miami mayor, responded first, and Reynolds even helped write the ordinance. She hopes the new regulation will go into effect across the state.

The ordinance addresses Florida’s susceptibility to sea level rise and extreme temperatures among other climate threats. The city aims to eliminate carbon dioxide emission and other green house gases by 2030, according to Inside Climate News.

“Solar reduces the cost of home ownership, it makes houses sell faster, it returns more to a builder, it makes local jobs, and most importantly, it reduces carbon emissions today to help our children and grandchildren have a better future tomorrow,” Stoddard said at the meeting Tuesday night.
