A group of developers came together to create a light installation in the Edgewood neighborhood during Art Basel this year.

For the first time, a collective group of developers came together to light up Edgewater along Biscayne Bay during Art Basel. Eastview Development, mckafka Development Group, Melo Group, and The Related Group joined forces to create a light installation from Dec. 4 through Dec. 7.

During each of those nights, beams of white light stretched into the night sky from the sites of Biscayne Beach (Eastview), The Crimson (mckafka), Bay House (Melo), Icon Bay and Paraiso Bay (Related).

Edgewater Lights Reflect Transformation

Miami broker Alicia Cervera Lamadrid, the creative mind behind the Edgewater light installation, thought of the idea after watching the neighborhood transform. Right after the buildings were developed, she remembered driving back and noticing how sad the towers looked at night when they were dark. But as people moved in and occupied the buildings, the lights would turn on and the city would “come alive.”

“What currently was an underdeveloped dark part of our bay front was going to be fully illuminated with beautiful towers and people living there,” she said. “It occurred to me that it was a unique opportunity to showcase the experience to the world during Art Basel by doing this art installation.”

The Edgewater corridor, defined by 17th Street to 37th Street on Biscayne Boulevard, received a great deal of attention due to the $1.5 billion of proposed luxury real estate in a span of four blocks. Cervera Lamadrid said that the light installation has been attracting additional attention, and she has received very positive feedback about it.

“It drew attention to this area, and people were curious about what was going on there,” she said. “I think it not only speaks about the excitement in that specific East Edgewater neighborhood, but also to the lights up and lights on in Miami, as we’ve turned the corner and are in another magnificent growth spurt.”
