Immigrants to Play Huge Role in Future Housing Market

by Peter Thomas Ricci

Immigrants already play a large role in housing, but that role will only grow more pronounced in the coming years.

Here’s an eye-opening stat for you – from 2010 to 2020, immigrants in the U.S. will account for 35.7 percent of all the growth in homeowners.

That was just one of the stats from a very interesting new report by the Research Institute for Housing America, which looked at the prominent role immigrants will play in the housing market as it recovers from the Great Recession. Other key findings included:

  • The number of foreign-born homeowners is expected to grow by 2.8 million from 2010 to 2020, up from 2.4 million from 2000 to 2010, 2.1 million from 1990 to 2000 and just 0.8 million from 1980 to 1990.
  • Among Hispanic immigrants who settled in the U.S. during the 1980s, homeownership has risen from 15.2 percent in 1990 to 52.9 percent in 2010, and by 2020, it’s expected to top 61.1 percent.

How will these numbers pan out in our specific state? Check out our graphic below to find out:
