Crystal Lagoons Plans Beaches for Inland Florida

by James Bellandi

rsz_crystal_lagoons_logo_highresIt seems like the work of science fiction: the ability to take a piece of land, no matter how close or far from the ocean, and turn it into a luxurious beach resort. What might be fantasy to some, Crystal Lagoons is making into a reality in Southern Florida.

Crystal Lagoons, founded in 2007, started a decade earlier in Chile. Fernando Fischmann, founder of Crystal Lagoons, was planning the development of San Alfonso del Mar in Algarrobo. The area was known for its treacherous seas. After initial attempts failed to keep the 20-acre manmade lagoon clean and clear, Fischmann developed a new, cost-conscious filtration system to keep the saltwater pure. According to Fischmann, maintaining the technology costs a fraction compared with chlorinated pools.

Now, the company looks to expand its unique technology in Northern Miami, with a planned development at 15045 Biscayne Blvd. In addition, four other projects have been announced in Tampa and one in Orlando.

Previous successful developments were noted in Latin America as well, including in a golf community which saw its putting greens turned into artificial beaches when the original development fell through.

Additionally, the company is in talks with government agencies to put beaches in inland public parks.
